About UK-HERI

At HERI we are passionate about enhancing quality of life through the development of advanced healthcare technologies and applied environmental research.

The UK Health and Environmental Research Institute (UK-HERI) is part of a Research & Technology Development Group employing 550 scientists and engineers, and containing nine individual institutes, each with a specific technological specialism and competence.

We provide a total package of support to all types of companies, particularly small and medium sized companies (SMEs). This includes cutting edge services of research and development right from initial concept generation through knowledge and technology development and ultimately assistance with market stimulation and commercialisation.

We also selectively choose to co-invest with industry to help build techno-economic feasibility studies and it is our policy to not hold intellectual property.

HERI works under the ethos of 'shared innovation', pooling knowledge and skills from research organisations and industrial organisations and consortia of industrial companies to achieve shared goals. In doing this we have developed numerous partnerships with clients, industry, academia, trade bodies, professional bodies and other research institutions.

Our researchers cover the full breadth of scientific disciplines from applied chemistry, materials and process chemistry and biotechnology. We use our expertise to build scientific knowledge as a Research Institute, HERI specialises in:

  • Applied research into the discovery, design and synthesis of inorganic and organic molecules (including organometallic chemistry) and understanding the mechanisms by which they interact to provide unique properties.
  • Application of polymer and material science to fields such as healthcare, environmental and recycling (biopolymers, biodegradable materials, bioactive materials and polymer scaffolds).
  • Applied research into the application of biology to industrial areas such as health care, crop production and agriculture, non-food uses of crops (e.g. biofuels, sustainable materials) and environmental uses.
Characterisation of material properties and compounds using techniques such as high pressure liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and spectroscopy (such as MS, IR, UV).
